Ed Sheeran has issued an apology to Manchester United's new manager, Ruben Amorim, after mistakenly interrupting his live TV interview following United's 1-1 Premier League draw at Ipswich Town on Sunday. Amorim, in his first game as Manchester United boss, was speaking to Sky Sports when Sheeran, an Ipswich minority owner, approached to greet analyst Jamie Redknapp.
Sheeran has been closely involved with Ipswich Town for several years. He became the club’s main shirt sponsor in 2021 and, after Ipswich’s back-to-back promotions that secured their return to the Premier League, he purchased a minority stake in the club this summer. His support for the team was evident when he was seen celebrating Omari Hutchinson’s equalizer during the match against Manchester United.
During the interview, Sheeran, who is a lifelong Ipswich fan, walked up to Redknapp and said, "I don't think he wants to speak to me. I love being back in the Premier League," He added, before leaving the scene, allowing the interview to continue.
Sheeran’s Apology on Instagram
He posted on Instagram: "Apologies if I offended Amorim yesterday, didn't actually realise he was being interviewed at the time, was popping to say hi and bye to Jamie [Redknapp]. Obvz feel a bit of a b*llend but life goes on. Great game though, congrats on all involved ."
The Game and Amorim’s Debut
The game, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was a challenging debut for Ruben Amorim as Manchester United manager. United started strong with Marcus Rashford scoring in the second minute, but Ipswich leveled the score just before halftime through Hutchinson’s deflected effort. Amorim, who was taking charge for the first time since replacing Erik ten Hag, was left frustrated as United failed to capitalize on their early momentum.
A Surprising Appearance
Sheeran’s appearance during the post-match interview was not planned, and it caught the attention of viewers as Redknapp, who was part of the analysis team, briefly paused the interview to acknowledge Sheeran’s greeting. The interruption was brief, but it was enough to cause a minor disruption in Amorim’s moment.
Continued Involvement at Ipswich Town
Beyond his role as a minority shareholder, Sheeran has been actively involved with Ipswich Town’s operations. Last offseason, Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton revealed that Sheeran played a part in the club’s successful player recruitment, even taking a Zoom call to discuss potential signings just before going on stage with Taylor Swift.
As Sheeran continues his support for Ipswich, his unintentional interruption of Amorim’s interview is a reminder of the pop star’s deep involvement with the club and his enthusiasm for the Premier League.
