The rising UFC talent shares strong opinions on the values that define a true fighter.

Ilia Topuria’s meteoric rise in the UFC spotlight has drawn inevitable comparisons to the promotion’s most polarizing figure—Conor McGregor. Yet, one MMA icon isn’t buying the narrative that “El Matador” is trying to fill McGregor’s shoes. Former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov recently shared his views on Topuria, commending him for staying true to himself and not chasing McGregor’s larger-than-life persona.

Khabib Nurmagomedov rejects the comparison

During a candid conversation with journalist Adam Zubayraev on YouTube, Nurmagomedov was asked whether Topuria could become the next McGregor. His response was firm and respectful:

“No [Topuria couldn’t be the next Conor], he’s a good guy,” Khabib said. “You can tell he’s trying to become someone... I don’t think so.”

Khabib, known for his long-standing feud with Conor McGregor—arguably the most intense rivalry in MMA history—clearly views Ilia Topuria through a different lens. While both fighters share a charismatic flair and immense self-belief, Khabib Nurmagomedov seems to appreciate Topuria's grounded approach.

Ilia Topuria has occasionally mirrored some of McGregor’s style and swagger—from his tattoos to echoing the Irishman’s famous lines. But despite these surface-level similarities, the 28-year-old Spanish-Georgian fighter has made a conscious effort to differentiate himself from “The Notorious.”

Topuria made headlines in 2024 when he openly criticized Conor McGregor on the Full Send podcast, questioning the former champ’s current state of mind and values.

“That guy is so sick—he has some problems within himself, you know?” Ilia Topuria said. “At the same time, when he was starting in mixed martial arts, he was an idol for all of us... But at some point, he betrayed the very principles that got him there.”

Topuria acknowledged McGregor’s early impact on the sport but emphasized how his actions later alienated fans and fighters alike.

“He became disrespectful to everyone... If they support you, you have to give them the same love back.”

The rise of Topuria

While Conor McGregor's legacy remains monumental, Ilia Topuria is carving his own path—one built on authenticity, discipline, and ferocity inside the Octagon. His recent performances have earned him admiration not only from fans but also from respected figures like Khabib Nurmagomedov.

As the UFC seeks new stars to carry its brand forward, Topuria may well be the face of the next era—not as a McGregor clone, but as a fighter with his own story, struggles, and principles.
