The U.S. Open tennis championship faces significant player withdrawals as former champion Bianca Andreescu and ex-world number two Paula Badosa announce their exits due to injuries.

Bianca Andreescu, the remarkable 2019 U.S. Open victor from Canada, won't be making a return this year due to a stress fracture in her back. This injury has been a recent concern for Andreescu, who displayed visible discomfort during her straight-set loss to Italy's Camila Giorgi at the Canadian Open. Notably, during that match, Andreescu had to summon a physiotherapist to the court, signaling the severity of her pain.

"During my match in Washington I started experiencing pain in my back that kept getting worse and I did everything I could the other night in Montreal to play at my highest level," Andreescu said.

"All of this led me to undergo medical examinations and sadly the results have revealed a small stress fracture in my back," she added.

The 23-year-old's injury woes continued, leading to her pull-out from the Cincinnati Masters, where she cited back pain as the reason. With a scheduled face-off against Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko in the U.S. Open's first round, this withdrawal is a major setback for the young tennis star.

Simultaneously, former world number two, Paula Badosa, also confirmed her absence from this year's U.S. Open. The 25-year-old Spanish player, originally set to compete against tennis legend Venus Williams, stated her intention to end her season to prioritize her health and recovery. This decision underscores what has been a challenging year for Badosa, who previously had to skip the French Open owing to a stress fracture in her spine.
