New York Yankees are navigating a delicate phase of the 2026 MLB season with multiple rotation concerns already looming large. With Carlos Rodón, Gerrit Cole, and Clarke Schmidt all missing time, the franchise is relying heavily on its remaining arms to steady the ship until reinforcements return.
That is why the latest update from manager Aaron Boone has immediately drawn attention across the Bronx. As Opening Day approaches, even minor setbacks are being treated with caution, especially given the team’s existing injury woes.
Boone addresses Cam Schlittler’s condition
On Feb. 12, Boone revealed that Cam Schlittler is currently dealing with mid-back inflammation. While the situation is not being labeled as serious, New York Yankees are choosing a preventive route to ensure the issue does not escalate.
“Cam Schlittler has got a little inflammation in his mid-back,” Aaron Boone told reporters (h/t SNY). “They’ll probably keep him off the mound for the next few days at least. He’s going to continue to throw, no issues there. He’s continuing with his throwing program, just something we’re trying to stay ahead of.”
The decision to keep Schlittler off the mound temporarily underscores the team’s careful management strategy. With the rotation already stretched thin, preserving health is paramount.
Schlittler downplays concern
Despite the development, Schlittler himself expressed confidence when addressing reporters following Aaron Boone’s announcement. The pitcher made it clear that he is not alarmed by the inflammation and believes he remains on track for the season’s start.
“Zero [concern], I’d say,” Cam Schlittler said (h/t SNY). “Again, it’s early. I’ve been dealing with it for a little bit, so I just want to make sure I’m on top of it. Again, I’m ready for Opening Day in that week in San Francisco… Just midback, just minor inflammation. Maybe more lat as well. Just making sure I’m staying on top of that the next few days and get ready for games.”
His optimism provides reassurance, but New York Yankees’ cautious approach signals how critical every arm is at this stage. With key names expected back later in the season, maintaining stability now could define how well New York weathers the early storm.
