Contreras is the son of former MLB pitcher Jose Contreras, who spent more than a decade in the major leagues. During his career, Jose Contreras made 299 appearances and compiled a 78–67 record with a 4.57 ERA.
The younger Contreras is already attracting attention as a promising prospect. The 17-year-old currently attends Blessed Trinity Catholic High School in Georgia and has committed to play college baseball for the Vanderbilt Commodores baseball program.

Joseph Contreras has been highly rated in scouting circles, earning a 10 out of 10 prospect grade from Perfect Game. His pitching arsenal has also impressed evaluators, highlighted by a fastball that has reportedly reached 98 mph.
