The Arizona Diamondbacks were taking on New York Mets in the MLB clash on Wednesday. But, the Mets camp were worried as their star player Jeff McNeil had to leave the field as he pulled his hamstring.
What exactly happened to Jeff McNeil?
Everything seemed great as Mets manager Carlos Mendoza shared what exactly happened to the third baseman in the field before mentioning that he is fine.
Felt like a cramp in the left hamstring, but he’s fine, Mendoza said via SNY. I was going to be aggressive anyway with [Jose] Azocar there. Trainers took a look at him, he's fine. Nothing to worry about.
During the seventh inning, McNeil pulled his hamstring while stretching to go from second to third and record a triple. However, as he reached the second base, it was evident on his face that he had pulled his hamstring in the process. As a precautionary measure, he was taken off the field and was replaced by Azocar as a pinch runner.
What's ahead for Jeff McNeil?
The Mets were able to defeat Diamondbacks 7-1 on Wednesday. They will not play on Thursday but will be hosting Chicago Cubs at the Citi Field on Friday. With an off day in between, McNeil will look to recover from his hamstring injury and feature in the Friday's clash.
He previously missed games due to an oblique strain this season. Wednesday's game was his 10th of the season. During this season, McNeil has hit .229 with a home run and five RBIs to his name.
The Mets have struggled with injury issues this season. But, lately they have received some good news. Infielder Ronny Mauricio, who is recovering from a torn ACL in his right knee, played his fifth rehab game with Single-A St. Lucie on May 6. He will continue his rehab at Double-A Binghamton starting May 9.
Pitcher Frankie Montas is also making great progress as he was suffering from a high-grade right lat strain. Montas threw his third bullpen on May 6 and will begin full Spring Training style buildup. He will likely return to the field in late May or June.
The Mets have a record of 24-14 as they lead the NL East by 2.0 games. The Philadelphia Phillies trail them with a 21-15 record in the divisional standings.
