NBA announces disciplinary action involving Anthony Edwards ahead of key clash.

Timberwolves look to stay focused as spotlight intensifies before facing the Clippers.

As the Minnesota Timberwolves gear up for their February 26 clash against the Los Angeles Clippers, All-Star guard Anthony Edwards has been dealt a costly setback off the court.

The NBA announced a $25,000 fine against Edwards following an incident during Minnesota’s recent win over the Portland Trail Blazers. The league issued a formal statement detailing the disciplinary action.

“Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards has been fined $25,000 for throwing the game ball with force into the spectator stands, it was announced today by James Jones, Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations. The incident occurred at halftime of the Timberwolves’ 124-121 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers at Moda center on Feb. 24.”

Incident during halftime sparks league action

The moment occurred at halftime of Minnesota’s 124-121 road victory, with the Timberwolves holding a narrow 62-59 lead at the break. Edwards was seen launching the game ball into the stands as players exited the floor. The reason behind the action remains unclear, but the league responded swiftly with financial discipline.

Despite the halftime incident, Anthony Edwards delivered a high-volume performance in the win. Logging 38 minutes, he scored 34 points on 11-of-27 shooting, including 5-of-13 from three-point range. He also contributed four rebounds, four assists, and two steals as Minnesota rebounded from a February 22 loss to the shorthanded Philadelphia 76ers.

The victory over Portland halted what could have been a momentum shift after Minnesota Timberwolves entered that matchup riding a three-game winning streak.

Financial impact minimal, timing notable

While $25,000 is a notable fine, Edwards remains one of the league’s highest-paid guards. His rookie extension, which began in the 2024-25 season, significantly elevated his earnings trajectory.

Anthony Edwards earned $42.1 million last season and is set to make $45.5 million this year. His salary will escalate to $55.6 million by the 2028-29 campaign. In total, the 24-year-old is slated to collect $244.6 million under his current deal with Minnesota.

Still, the timing of the penalty draws attention as Minnesota Timberwolves prepare for a pivotal matchup against the Clippers. With postseason positioning tightening, Minnesota will rely heavily on Edwards’ leadership and production — minus the distractions.

Whether the fine becomes a footnote or fuels added intensity remains to be seen, but the spotlight is firmly back on the franchise cornerstone heading into Wednesday night.
