The Canadian point guard Jamal Murray set a world record after his contract extension at the Denver Nuggets of a whopping $208 million becoming the highest-earning player without an All-Star selection in NBA history. Murray agreed to stay with the Nuggets extending his contract for four more years with a $208 million extension. He will stay with the Nuggets till the 2028-2029 season. He earlier had a five-year $158.2 million deal that he signed in 2019.

Historic record

Murray after the new contract has become the top earner among players who are yet to be named to an NBA All-Star team. Earlier Tobias Harris earning $303 million and CJ McCollum with $281.1 million were the top earners. Murray's impact with his scoring ability and leadership in the Nuggets have fetched him this historic extension. Murray has been a key performer playing in tough situations like where he led the team to their first-ever NBA championship in 2023.

The news was confirmed by ESPN's Adrian Wojmaroswki.

"Denver Nuggets star Jamal Murray has agreed on a four-year, $208 million maximum contract extension, his agents Jeff Schwartz and Mike George tell ESPN. The deal — guaranteeing Murray $244M over next five seasons — secures a franchise cornerstone to the Western contender," he wrote on his X account

Jokic Factor

Despite his reputation, Murray's recent performances have been average for the team. In the 2024 playoffs, Murray averaged 20.6 per game which marks his lowest in four postseason appearances. Despite the dip, he was awarded a lucrative extension. Another factor behind this historic deal is his on-field chemistry with  Nikola Jokic which the other teams find hard to defend against. The Jokic-Murray 1-2 punch is considered one of the most lethal. Denver kept Murray as they want to preserve the chemistry with Jokic still in his prime.
