Washington Wizards have delivered a significant update regarding the status of Anthony Davis, casting fresh uncertainty over the star forward’s return this season.
Wizards confirm no basketball clearance
Davis, currently sidelined with ligament damage in his left hand, has not yet been cleared for basketball activities. According to ESPN’s Marc Spears, the franchise released a statement outlining the next steps in his recovery:
“Wizards say Anthony Davis, who is out with ligament damage in his left hand, has not been cleared for basketball activity. Davis will be reevaluated in two weeks, and further updates will be provided as appropriate.”
The update underscores that Davis remains in the rehabilitation phase, with no definitive timeline established for his return to game action.
Injury woes continue after blockbuster moves
The 10-time All-Star’s 2025-26 campaign has been derailed by injury once again. After beginning the season with the Dallas Mavericks following a blockbuster trade from the Los Angeles Lakers, Davis managed just 29 appearances before suffering the hand injury on January 8 against the Utah Jazz.
He did not return prior to the trade deadline and was subsequently moved to Washington. Washington Wizards acquired Davis with hopes of strengthening both ends of the floor and pairing him alongside Trae Young. However, availability quickly emerged as a pressing concern.
Washington’s medical staff is now overseeing his recovery process, but Thursday’s statement suggests the franchise is taking a cautious approach.
With 29 games remaining on the schedule, the possibility of Anthony Davis missing the rest of the season cannot be ruled out.
Long-term health the priority
Durability has shadowed Davis in recent years. During his tenure in Los Angeles, he endured extended absences due to foot, ankle, and other lower-body injuries. This season, he is averaging a career-low 20.4 points per game and has appeared in just 20 contests.
While Washington Wizards general manager Will Dawkins previously expressed optimism about a potential return, the latest development highlights the organization’s emphasis on long-term recovery rather than rushing him back prematurely.
For now, Washington’s postseason ambitions and roster dynamics remain in flux as the franchise awaits clearer answers on Anthony Davis’ availability. The next two weeks will be pivotal in determining whether the former champion can make an impact before the 2025-26 campaign concludes.
