In an appearance on Wynn Las Vegas, O'Neal reflected on the pivotal moment when Jive Records offered him a $10 million deal for three albums. The deal would turn him into a household name not only in sports but in the music industry as well.
Shaq boldly stated, “I have the best discography ever for a non-rapper,” citing collaborations with icons such as Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Notorious B.I.G., and Jay-Z, among others. His debut album, Shaq Diesel, went platinum and cemented his place in hip-hop history.
His collaborations with some of the most influential figures in the music industry helped solidify his credibility as a rapper. "It don’t get no bigger," O'Neal said, proud of his work alongside legendary artists from Michael Jackson to Jay-Z.
The hesitation before signing
While the offer was lucrative, O'Neal admitted that he had reservations before signing the deal. Reflecting on his initial hesitation, he said, "I was like, ‘I gotta take it.’ But then reality kicked in." His agent had presented him with the offer, and after the excitement died down, O'Neal needed assurance that he could pursue his passion without restrictions.
He revealed, “I said as long as I could rap with all my favourite rappers, I’d do it. And they agreed.” This condition set the stage for tracks like (I Know I Got) Skillz and I’m Outstanding.
After a long hiatus, O'Neal made a triumphant return to music in 2023 with another album, further expanding his already impressive discography. Beyond his rap career, he has also gained fame as a prominent DJ, proving that his musical journey is far from over.
