Story Highlights:

LeBron James has exercised his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.

This will be LeBron James' record-extending 23rd season in the NBA.

LeBron James is officially staying with the Los Angeles Lakers for at least one more season. The four-time NBA champion has exercised his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, avoiding free agency this summer, his agent Rich Paul confirmed to ESPN on Sunday, June 29.

No free agency for LeBron James this summer

James, who turns 41 during the 2025-26 campaign, will continue his NBA journey into a record-extending 23rd season. He also maintains a no-trade clause, giving him full control over his future. His decision to stay keeps the Lakers in championship contention alongside newly acquired superstar Luka Doncic.

LeBron wants to compete for a championship, Paul told ESPN. He knows the Lakers are building for the future.

LeBron James' historic performance in his 22nd season

Despite his age, James continues to defy the odds. In the 2024-25 season, he posted stellar numbers: 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds per game.

He shot an efficient 51.3% from the field, 37.6% from beyond the arc, and 78.2% from the free-throw line. His performance earned him an All-NBA selection for a record-setting 21st consecutive time, further cementing his place in basketball history.

Future uncertain beyond 2026

James could have opted out of the final year of his two-year, $101.3 million contract and entered free agency. This would have made him eligible for a new three-year deal worth $175.3 million, or a shorter two-year agreement with the Lakers. However, he chose to return on his current deal.

As retirement looms, James has not provided a definitive timeline for hanging up his jersey. He recently commented, “I can’t play that much further,” signaling that the end of his legendary career could be near.

Championship ambitions with Luka Doncic

The Lakers made a blockbuster move at the 2025 trade deadline by acquiring Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks. With a full season ahead to build chemistry between James and Doncic, Los Angeles is aiming to make a serious title push in 2026.
