NBA Trade News: Lakers Face Wrath of the Hornets Following Failed Trade of Mark Williams

Story Highlights:

Lakers made the move to sign Mark Williams.

Lakers pulled out of the trade following Williams failed physical assessment.

Lakers meanwhile signed Alen Lin.

The Lakers' season has been anything from calm. First, Luka Dončić moved to Los Angeles with a blockbuster transaction. Now, the front office's most recent roster move, which would have brought them young defensive anchor Mark Williams, has entirely fallen apart. In what appeared to be a sensible deal for both clubs, the Lakers agreed to transfer Dalton Knecht and draft picks to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Williams, a promising shot-blocking center. It would have been a logical move as, Knecht would have provided Charlotte, which is currently rebuilding, with a versatile scoring presence. The Lakers were eager to fortify their frontcourt after moving Anthony Davis and saw Williams as an ideal rim protector to combine with Doncic.

Hornets Looking to Challenge Lakers

However, it was reported by Shams Charania that the Hornets had been in contact with the NBA to explore options to dispute the Lakers' failed physical assessment of Williams. "The Williams/Dalton Knecht trade was nixed Saturday, and now Hornets weigh avenues to challenge," Charania wrote. Further reports suggest he's suffering from multiple medical concerns unrelated to his previous back injury. The Lakers, unwilling to take the risk, pulled the plug on the trade-a decision that didn't sit well with the Hornets.

Charlotte is now pushing back, apparently looking for ways to challenge Los Angeles' assessment of Williams' health. If the NBA gets involved, it might set a precedent for future medical assessments and trade determinations.

Lakers Meanwhile Sign Alex Len

Following the failed transfer event, the Lakers have found a temporary solution to mitigate the situation. On Tuesday, the Lakers reached an agreement to sign veteran Center Alex Len, while waiving Christian Wood, who has remained injured throughout the season.

Len was all set to sign with the Indiana Pacers but the Center could not let go of the opportunity to sign with the Lakers. Having entered the NBA spectrum in 2013, Len has had short stints with several NBA teams. During this period he has contributed to varying roles. Now, with the Lakers aiming to further solidify their squad and base the team around Luka Doncic, Len fills the void of a substitute center in the team.
