Afghanistan beat Australia by 21 runs to create history.

The earthquake's epicenter was nearest to semifinal venue Trinidad.

As Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan stunned T20 World Cup 2021 champions Australia with a 21-run win, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck northwest 97 km of Trinidad’s Port of Spain at 11:58 PM (local time) on June 22. As per TTWeatherCenter, lengthy tremors were felt as far north as St. Vincent where the Super 8 clash at Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown took place.

So far, there is no tsunami threat in the region. St Vincent is scheduled to host Afghanistan's last Super 8 match against Bangladesh on June 24 (local time) which is a must-win encounter for them. Meanwhile, only one match will be hosted in Trinidad which was closest to earthquake’s epicenter. The first semifinal on June 26 will be played at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba.

Chand's reaction to earthquake

Former India Under-19 captain player Unmukt Chand took to X and posted about earthquake.

“Massive earthquake felt in Trinidad and the nearby islands as soon as Afghanistan beat Australia. Like literally,” Chand wrote.

Afghanistan's chance to reach semifinals after big win

Afghanistan avenged the defeat they faced in ODI World Cup 2023 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. They kept their chances of reaching the semifinals alive by ending Australia's winning streak in T20 World Cups. They won eight consecutive games, most by any team in T20 World Cups.

Now, Afghanistan need to beat Bangladesh in their last Super 8 match and hope that Australia lose to India or don't win by a big margin. Afghanistan will have their work cut out as Australia will play an in-form India led by Rohit Sharma before their Super 8 match. India have been unbeaten in the tournament so far. They boosted their net run rate (NRR) with a 50-run win over Najmul Hossain Shanto's Bangladesh on June 22.
