The highly anticipated Duleep Trophy 2024-25 is set to kick off on September 5, 2024, marking the beginning of India's domestic cricket season for 2024-2025. This edition of the tournament carries significant importance as it will serve as a vital preparation ground for Indian cricketers aiming to secure their spots in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh. The competition will showcase several prominent Indian players, who are all eager to make their mark and earn a place in the Test squad.
In a notable change, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented a revised format for the Duleep Trophy, abandoning the traditional zonal structure in favor of a new four-team setup. Teams A, B, C, and D will compete in a round-robin format, with the team accumulating the most points at the end of the tournament being crowned the winner. It's worth noting that there will be no knockout stages in this season's competition.
Stage is set for Duleep Trophy 2024
The Duleep Trophy 2024-25 will be held across three venues: the Rural Development Trust Stadium and ACA ADCA Ground in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, and the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The tournament is scheduled to conclude on September 22.
To ensure the national team is well-prepared for upcoming challenges, the BCCI has mandated that domestic players participate in the Duleep Trophy. However, top players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravichandran Ashwin have been excused to minimise the risk of injury ahead of the Bangladesh series.
This season's Duleep Trophy will feature Shubman Gill leading Team A, Abhimanyu Easwaran captaining Team B, Ruturaj Gaikwad at the helm of Team C, and Shreyas Iyer leading Team D. In a recent development, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been released from Team B, and the BCCI is yet to announce his replacement. Suryakumar Yadav is also doubtful for the tournament. Meanwhile, Prasidh Krishna and Ishan Kishan are also reportedly doubtful for the Duleep Trophy's starter. Moreover, Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik will be unable to participate in the tournament due to illness, with Navdeep Saini and Gaurav Yadav filling in as their replacements.
