Australia's star batter Travis Head spoke about the possibility of an India versus Australia final in the T20 World Cup 2024. He believes Rohit Sharma-led India will be looking to get revenge after losing the finals of the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup in 2023 to Australia. Head himself played a crucial role in both victories, scoring centuries and winning Player of the Match awards. Head added that a rematch in the T20 World Cup final would be a highly anticipated and exciting encounter.
Travis Head teases Rohit Sharma amidst T20 World Cup
"It would be nice. It would be nice to be in the final. I think everyone in India would love that, especially considering what's happened in the last two finals. So, I'm sure India wants some revenge at some point. There would be good theatre around it if that were the case. Let's hope that we're in it, and let's hope you're in it, and we'll see what happens," Head told Times of India.
Travis Head's performances in the 2023 ICC finals were nothing short of phenomenal. In the WTC final, he unleashed a blistering knock of 163 in the first innings. This dominant display effectively shifted the momentum away from India and put Australia in a strong position. Head's heroics continued in the ODI WC final. Chasing a target of 241 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, he played a crucial anchor role. His unbeaten knock of 137 runs* (not out) proved to be the match-winner, guiding Australia to victory.
Despite his impressive performance against India, Head acknowledges the team's strength. He highlighted the quality of their batting line-up, specifically mentioning experienced players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He also recognized Jasprit Bumrah as an outstanding bowler, adding another layer of respect to India's formidable team.
Team India is in good hands: Travis Head
"India is in good hands. I think you could probably name four or five teams that are going to be in the mix. Playing an attacking brand of cricket is crucial for them. With Rohit and Virat, and their exceptional bowling led by star bowler Bumrah, who has also been outstanding in the IPL, their chances are high. Their chances are probably similar to the three or four other teams that are in contention," he added.
Australia's journey in the T20 World Cup has been a rollercoaster. For years, the coveted trophy remained elusive. Finally, in 2021, they managed to break the drought and claim their first-ever T20 World Cup title. This was a momentous occasion for Australian cricket fans. However, the following year brought a dose of disappointment. Despite playing on home soil, Australia couldn't replicate their previous success. They were unable to qualify for the knockout stages, falling short during the group matches. Under Mitchell Marsh's leadership Australia will look to go strong in the T20 World Cup and extend their trophy count with yet another title.
