Gilchrist wants Rishabh Pant to be fined for the heated conversation.

Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist wants on-field umpires to take charge after an animated discussion with Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant caused a few minutes' delay in the clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Pant had a heated argument with umpire Rohan Pandit over a miscommunication about DRS review. It took place in the fourth over of LSG's innings when Ishant Sharma bowled a wide down the leg side against Devdutt Padikkal. Pant initially reviewed the decision and then claimed he didn't which led to the altercation.

Gilchrist backed the umpires to take control and criticised Pant's outburst.

"I saw another example tonight where umpires need to take better control of games, and that is in any format. They just got to do a better job at moving things forward. There was a dispute over whether Rishabh had reviewed it. Okay, there was a miscommunication over the review call," Gilchrist said while speaking to Cricbuzz.

Pant has already been fined twice over slow over-rate. He wants umpires to warn captains if such an incident takes place again.

"But they stood there and spoke about that for 3-4 minutes. It's a very simple conversation, I believe. No matter how much Rishabh is complaining or any other player is complaining, umpires should just say, 'it's over' and quickly move on. But if he keeps talking, he should get fined," Gilchrist added.

Pant’s DC get their campaign back on track

Apart from the incident, Pant had a good day at the office in Lucknow. In the run chase of 168 at Ekana Cricket Stadium, he scored 41 runs from 24 balls. His knock featured four fours and a couple of sixes. The wicketkeeper-batter shared a 77-run partnership for the third wicket with debutant Jake Fraser-McGurk. He lost his wicket to Ravi Bishnoi after failing to pick the googly. However, he took DC to the doorstep of victory.

DC won the match by six wickets and returned to winning ways. This was their second win of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. With their second win from six games, DC moved to ninth position from the bottom of the points table.
