West Indies cricketing legend opened up on India’s opening combination in the T20 World Cup 2024. He said that India had the option to play with a left-right combination but Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are two great players and the team should stick with their roles as openers in the marquee event in the USA and West Indies.
India have already qualified for the Super 8 defeating USA in their last outing but the side were seen struggling, especially the openers. Virat Kohli is yet to score double-digit runs in the mega event as he just scored five runs in his three outings including a golden duck.
On the other hand, Rohit scored 52 runs against Ireland but after that India skipper was unable to score runs in the last two outings.
"Definitely, India had the option to play a left-right opening partnership. They went with two great players, two guys who’ve done a great job for India with the bat for their individual franchise as well in terms of the captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. I think they’ve got to stick with it as you just said if you do make changes on top, Virat Kohli has to come in the order a little bit lower and that’s going to upset things there," Lara said on Starsports.
Lara believes that India should go with the same combination until they are winning games. He also reckoned that the batting conditions in the USA were not the best and both batters will score good runs in their upcoming clashes.
"I believe that the combination India is having and India has to back the two of them. At some point in time, they’re going to come good with conditions, the batting conditions in the USA were not the very best. I don’t believe you start making changes especially if you’re winning," he added.
India will now face Canada in their T20 World Cup 2024 outing which is scheduled to take place at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida.
