Shreyas Iyer has once again given a major injury scare as he has aggravated his back injury in middle of the Ranji Trophy 2023-2024 final and ahead of upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He missed Day 4's action of the Ranji Trophy final between Mumbai and Vidarbha due to back spasms and reportedly underwent medical scans. This isn't the first time Iyer has faced back issues. He previously complained of spasms during the second Test against England in Vizag, leading to his exclusion from the remaining matches of the five-match series. However, no official reason was given for his exclusion from the Test series, and he also skipped the Ranji Trophy quarter-final.
Shreyas Iyer's Back Injury Raises Concerns for IPL 2024
While Shreyas attempted a comeback for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semi-final and even scored a crucial 95 in the final, his participation in the upcoming IPL season is shrouded in doubt. Meanwhile, Sports Tak has learnt that Iyer's back spasms, which required surgery last year, have flared up again and he won't take field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final as well. The star batter's injury may also lead to his absence from initial matches for his IPL franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Notably, Iyer required treatment for back spasms twice during his 95-run knock in the Ranji Trophy final, further highlighting the potential seriousness of the issue.
Iyer who complained of back injury again, underwent scan in a hospital in Mumbai. HIs reports have been sent to NCA for further assessment and a feedback is awaited. To Sports Tak knowledge, once the feedback will come From NCA, BCCI medial team will consult with KKR management a call will be taken on Iyer's participation in IPL 2024.

Iyer sat out of IPL 2023 too
Kolkata Knight Riders captain Iyer didn't feature in the last season of the IPL as he was sidelined due to back surgery. After a lengthy injury layoff, Iyer made a return to competitive cricket at the Asia Cup 2023 held in Sri Lanka playing an instrumental role in India's impressive campaign at the ODI World Cup in October-November, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament.
Despite his impressive performance on the field, Iyer alongside Ishan Kishan were excluded from the BCCI's central contract for their non-participation in domestic cricket. However, it will be interesting to see whether Iyer can recover in time to lead KKR in the IPL 2024 or not.
