Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill holds the distinction of being the youngest skipper in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He assumed leadership of GT after their previous captain Hardik Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians (MI) in an all-cash deal. Despite having the experienced New Zealand batter Kane Williamson in their squad, the franchise opted for the young Indian batter to lead the charge. In the 2023 season, Shubman Gill made a significant impact by scoring 890 runs across 17 matches.
In an interview on the Star Sports show "Captains’ Speak," Shubman Gill shared some advice given to him by the current Indian head coach, Rahul Dravid. It's noteworthy that Rahul Dravid was the head coach of the U-19 team that clinched the U-19 World Cup in 2018, a tournament in which Shubman Gill played a pivotal role, with the team being captained by Prithvi Shaw.
"Always trust your game mujhe Rahul sir ne bola tha (Rahul sir once told me)," Gill said.
GT skipper further said Rahul Dravid has always advised him to trust in the preparation and he has always followed that.
"He has always advised me to trust in my preparation regardless of the situation. Just as a child takes small steps one after another, I have also followed that and things have gone so far as per my expectations. I prepare for whatever is next, game or series. I prepare my mindset accordingly," Gill added.
Mixed-bag campaign for Shubman Gill
Under the new leadership of Shubman Gill, the Gujarat-based franchise has experienced mixed results. GT has secured two victories out of the five matches they've played this season, currently holding the seventh position in the points table. This season, Shubman Gill has been commended for his captaincy skills and his strategic decisions on the field. However, GT has faced defeats in their last two matches against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
