The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold a meeting with the owners of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises in Mumbai on Wednesday (31 July). The major topic of discussion will likely be defaulting foreign players for lacking respect and commitment towards the IPL auction process
Some of these players who lack commitments are Jason Roy, Alex Hales, and Wanindu Hasaranga and all those who have withdrawn from the IPL on various occasions in the past and the main reason was because of low bid- have raised concerns of the IPL management. None-too-convincing reasons for their withdrawals have ranged from personal issues to injuries, leaving franchises less than pleased. The meeting will emphasize the need for corrective measures to address these issues and ensure player commitment. reported cricbuzz.
Impact player rule will also be discussed
Apart from this the other topic will be Impact Player rule as the cricketing experts are favor of this rule.
“Yes, the good all-rounders – Axar, Jadeja and others – continued to find a way in the XI but more options meant someone like Washington Sundar hardly played in 2024. So overall development of players like Washington Sundar was certainly impacted but at the same time, coaches had more options to play with.
Like beefing up batting or strengthening bowling as per the game requirement. Whatever was happening, the spectators and viewers weren’t complaining because the match wasn’t over even when it was 50/4 or 200/3,” a franchise official told CricketNext.

The retention rule likely to be changed
Another major point of discussion will be the much-awaited retention rule and how many players a franchise can retain ahead of the mega auction of IPL 2025. There are reports that almost all franchises are reportedly in favour of raising retentions from three to five.
“The chatter will not stop because every team is in a different position before the 2025 season. Naturally, the ones who have done well want more and more retentions. But retentions undervalue the auction. And auction is an important part of the IPL ecosystem. In years to come, when the fan bases are well and truly cemented for all sides, it could well be a very transfer dominated ecosystem but as of now, auctions are important," a franchise offical said.
