Karnataka captain Mayank Agarwal was deboarded from the IndiGo flight and rushed to the hospital in Agartala when he complained of a burning sensation in his mouth. Agarwal was in the ICU but is currently out of danger and his vitals are stable.
Hours after the incident, Tripura Health Secretary Kiran Gitte gave an update on Agarwal’s condition and explained what led to the Indian cricketer’s hospitalisation.
“Team member of Karnataka Ranji Team, Mayank Agarwal while travelling in flight accidentally drank a water pouch. He immediately had a burning sensation. His condition is stable. We hope that he will come out of this very soon. Investigation is underway,” Tripura Health Secretary Kiran Gitte told PTI.
West Tripura's SP Kiran Kumar K said that Agarwal's manager is underway and they will be investigating the matter.
“Mayank Agarwal, an international cricketer, while sitting on a flight saw a pouch in front of him and thinking of it as water, drank it. He had swelling and ulcers in his mouth. His condition is normal, and his vitals are stable. His manager has made a complaint. We are registering the complaint and will investigate the matter,” he said.
On the other hand, IndiGo issued a statement where they did not explain the reason behind the medical emergency.
"IndiGo flight 6E 5177 operating from Agartala to Delhi returned to origin due to a medical emergency onboard. The passenger was off-loaded and was rushed to the hospital for further medical assistance. The aircraft took off again for its destination at 1620h," the press release mentioned.
Agarwal is currently recovering. He has been ruled out of Karnataka’s next clash against Railways in Surat. In his absence, Nikin Jose is expected to don the captaincy hat.
The 32-year-old has scored two centuries in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2023-24. Under his captaincy, Karnataka have won two matches out of four, lost one and one ended in a draw.
