Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Pat Cummins, jokingly admitted that sometimes he wishes he was a batter. Cummins' remark came after a high-scoring IPL 2024's match between SRH and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on April 15. Hyderabad put up a massive total of 287/3, with Bengaluru managing 262 in response, eventually losing the match by 25 runs. Dinesh Karthik's brilliant 83 for RCB couldn't prevent their defeat. Cummins' comment reflects the challenges faced by bowlers in the fast-paced world of T20 cricket, where high scores are becoming increasingly common. He jokingly pleaded for a few more years, hinting at the possibility that bowlers might become redundant in the face of ever-increasing batsmen dominance in the shortest format of the game.
Wish I was a batter: Cummins
"Wish I was a batter. Against Mumbai a few weeks ago I thought it won't happen again, but it has happened again. Give me a few more years please (on if bowlers will go extinct)! It feels like you bowl an over for seven or eight feels great," Cummins said in the post-match presentation ceremony. Cummins highlighted the joy and freedom with which their batters approach the game, expressing delight in their ability to play with smiles on their faces. Despite the unpredictability of pitch conditions, he noted the team's adaptability and the positive atmosphere within the squad," Cummins said in the post-match presentation.
"I've given up trying to read the pitches. Really happy with our cricket, four wins now, the freedom with which the batters are going out to play is great and few wily bowlers doing the job as well," Cummins added.
How the RCB vs SRH's match unfolded?
RCB captain Faf du Plessis, opted to chase after winning the toss. However, his decision to bowl first backfired spectacularly. The Hyderabad openers put on a century partnership in just over 7 overs before Abhishek Sharma's dismissal. But the onslaught continued with Travis Head scoring the fourth-fastest IPL century in just 39 balls. The middle order of Hyderabad continued the domination. Heinrich Klaasen smashed a quickfire fifty, followed by a cameo from Abdul Samad (37 runs off 10 balls) to propel their team to a mammoth 287 runs. While the RCB bowlers struggled throughout, Will Jacks impressed with his bowling in the Powerplay. Lockie Ferguson picked up two wickets but was expensive, mirroring the struggles of the other RCB bowlers. In reply, Bangalore fought valiantly with Dinesh Karthik's 83 leading the charge. However, they fell short by 25 runs. Notably, none of the bowlers from either side managed to concede less than 10 runs per over.
Riding on this win SRH are well placed at no.4 in the IPL 2024's points table while RCB are reeling at the bottom of the standings with just one win in seven matches. SRH will next face Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 20 while Du Plessis' RCB will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 21.
