India's ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin labelled newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir as 'relaxed rancho' after observing his approach since he joined the camp for the Bangladesh Test series. Ashwin was asked to compare the coaching styles of Gambhir and former head coach Rahul Dravid. Surprisingly, he indicated that Gambhir is more relaxed whereas Dravid wanted everything in order as part of his process.
"I think he is very relaxed. I want to call him 'relaxed rancho'. There's no pressure at all. In the morning, there will be a team huddle. He is very relaxed about that as well. He will be like 'are you coming, please come'. It's like that," Ashwin said in one of his YouTube videos.
"With Rahul bhai, as soon as we come, he wanted things in order: even a bottle should be kept at a particular place at a particular time. He is very regimented. He wanted things in order.
"With Gambhir, he doesn't expect all that. He has a relaxed order. He will be a people's man. He will capture everybody's heart. I think he will be loved by the boys," he added.
Ashwin lauded skipper Rohit Sharma as well for leading the team in a calm and composed manner.
"Also, Rohit is a very good leader who works well with everybody. Even when he is leading the side, we can see that. He is very calm and composed as a leader,” the 38-year-old said.
Ashwin’s performance in first Test
Ashwin was named ‘Player of the match’ for his all-round performance in 280-run win over Bangladesh in the first at his homeground, MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
First, he scored 113 and shared a crucial partnership with Ravindra Jadeja when India were struggling for 144/6. Then, he took six wickets in Bangladesh's second innings, bowling them out for 234.
Next Test
The second Test of the two-Test series will be played at Green Park, Kanpur. The pitch is expected to help the spinners. Ashwin needs nine more wickets to surpass Australia’s Nathan Lyon to become leading wicket-taker among current cricketers.
