Batting coach Vikram Rathour is likely to take the role of NCA head.

VVS Laxman's contract as NCA head will end next month.

As VVS Laxman's contract as National Cricket Academy (NCA) head is coming to its end next month, India's outgoing batting coach Vikram Rathour may replace him. Sports Tak has learned that Laxman is unlikely to renew his contract and it may see Rathour replacing him at NCA in Bengaluru.

“It is very likely that you may see Rathour heading NCA. For now, a call on VVS Laxman's contract renewal is pending but the conversation from his side is not positive,” the source told Sports Tak.

However, the announcement won't be made before ICC's Annual General Meeting in Sri Lanka as Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary is yet to talk to Laxman.

“Rathour might be asked to take charge at NCA. BCCI secretary (Jay Shah) after the ICC meeting is likely to have a word with VVS to understand his side,” the source added.

Rathour was an integral part of Rahul Dravid’s support staff which helped Rohit Sharma-led India lift the T20 World Cup 2024 and end their ICC trophy drought. The former Punjab skipper joined Dravid’s coaching staff in 2021.

Laxman as interim head coach

Laxman recently travelled with a young Shubman Gill-led side as interim head coach on Zimbabwe tour for five-T20I series. After a defeat in the series opener, a second-string Indian side registered a 4-1 series win.

During the T20I series, Gautam Gambhir was announced as India’s new head coach. It was also learnt that Gambhir wanted to go to Zimbabwe as head coach but the tour to Sri Lanka was set as his first assignment in the new role.

Big announcements yet to be made

Gambhir's support staff is yet to be announced. He made a few recommendations including Abhishek Nayar, Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate. Also, India's new T20I captain after Rohit Sharma's retirement is yet to be revealed. BCCI is yet to announce the T20I and ODI squads for the limited-overs tour which will commence on July 27.
