What did Mark Boucher say on removing Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians' captaincy?
Mumbai Indians' head coach Mark Boucher recently discussed the strategic decision to appoint Hardik Pandya as the new captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma. Boucher clarified that the decision was made with the team's best cricketing interests in mind, especially during a period of transition. Boucher underlined the main objective behind the decision was to enhance Rohit Sharma's performance by focusing on his batting abilities.
"I think it was purely a cricketing decision. We saw the window period to get Hardik back as a player. For me, it's a transition phase. A lot of people don't understand in India. People get quite emotional, but you know you take the emotions away from it. I think it's just more of a cricketing decision that was made, and I do think it is going to bring the best out of Rohit as a person and as a player. Just let him go out and enjoy and score some good runs," Boucher said on Smash Sports podcast.
"I mean one of the things I have spoken about is when you arrive at the IPL and he (Chris Morris) will be able to tell you as well that there's a lot of stuff going on, there are photoshoots and this and that and a lot of emphasis is not actually on the cricket. It's more about the advertising and all that sort of stuff," Boucher added.
Mumbai Indians pin trust on Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya rejoined Mumbai Indians in November 2023 after leading Gujarat Titans for two seasons. His captaincy announcement for Mumbai Indians, a franchise that has clinched the IPL title five times, came just days before the IPL 2024 mini-auction. This significant change sparked a wave of controversy and led to a loss of 400,000 followers on the team's social media within an hour of revealing the news. Fans voiced their discontent over the end of Rohit Sharma's successful tenure as captain, which spanned over a decade.
