Team India star batter Shubman Gill etched his name in history on October 22 (Sunday) when he became the fastest batter to complete 2,000 runs in ODIs. The 24-year-old stylish right-handed batter notched the milestone with a glorious cover drive in the ODI World Cup match against New Zealand in Dharamsala. In the process, the young Indian star obliterated South Africa legend Hashim Amla's record, who completed 2,000 ODI runs in 40 innings while Gill reached the mark in just 38 innings.
Top five fastest batters to 2,000 ODI runs:
Shubman Gill (India) - 38 innings
Hashim Amla (South Africa) - 40 innings
Zaheer Abbas (Pakistan) - 45 innings
Kevin Pietersen (England) - 45 innings
Babar Azam (Pakistan) - 45 innings
Rassie van der Dussen (South Africa) - 45 innings
Hashim Amla reached 2,000 runs in his 40th ODI innings in a match against India at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth on January 21, 2011.
In addition to surpassing Hashim Amla's record, Gill also broke Shikhar Dhawan's record for being the fastest Indian batter to reach the 2,000-run mark in ODIs. Dhawan had set the previous record by achieving this milestone in his 48th ODI innings during a match against Sri Lanka at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on November 9, 2014.
Gill has displayed remarkable form in 2023, leading the run-scoring charts in the 50-over format with more than 1,300 runs to his name. No other batter has even reached the 1,000-run mark in the ODI format this year. Gill recently returned from a bout of dengue illness, causing him to miss the first two matches of the World Cup.
Gill's achievement reflects his remarkable consistency and batting prowess in the limited-overs format. His ability to reach this milestone at a young age and in such a short span of innings underscores his potential as a prominent figure in Indian cricket.
Gill's impressive batting performances and rapid accumulation of runs make him a valuable asset to the Indian cricket team, and his record-breaking achievement is a testament to his talent and dedication to the sport.
