Gill, initially acquired by Gujarat Titans for Rs 7 crore in a draft ahead of their debut IPL season in 2022, has seen a remarkable rise over the past two years. At 24, Gill's appointment as captain marks him as one of the youngest full-time leaders of an IPL franchise, following in the footsteps of Virat Kohli, who took over the captaincy of Royal Challengers Bangalore at the age of 22 in 2011.
Under the mentorship of head coach Ashish Nehra, who has already demonstrated his coaching acumen with Hardik Pandya, Gill is poised to have strong support in his new leadership role. In his first season with Gujarat Titans, Gill's strike rate exceeded 130, and he amassed 483 runs.
The 2023 season was a breakout year for Gill, as he scored an impressive 890 runs, including three centuries, with an extraordinary strike rate of 157.80. This record-breaking season underscored his capabilities as a batsman and his potential to lead the team effectively.
As Gill prepares to captain Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024, he brings not just his batting prowess but also the promise of fresh leadership.
