Kolkata Knight Riders opener Phil Salt lavished praise on Gautam Gambhir for his mentorship in the Indian Premier League 2024. Current India head coach, Gambhir mentored KKR and the franchise lifted their third title in a cash-rich league. The franchise last won an IPL title in Gambhir's captaincy back in 2014. Salt said that Gambhir knows how and when to push harder.
Salt revealed that he shares a relationship with Gambhir and they often exchange texts. He also revealed that Gambhir advised him to score the majority of runs in overs between 10 and 20.
"From day one, we got along very well," Salt remarked during the CEAT Cricketing Rating Awards. "Gautam is a man who reads a room incredibly well. He knows when to put an arm around you and when to push you harder. That's a trait all great coaches have. I have a great relationship with him and still exchange texts with him. He's always watching cricket and staying in touch—a great man" said Salt.
"The main bit of advice I took from GG was to take the game deep, especially here in India," Salt said. "From the moment I got off the first training session, he sat me down and said, 'I know you're going to score runs for us, but I want you to score the majority of your runs between overs ten and 20.' Even if it starts slow, he wanted me to hang in there, ensure I'm there from overs ten onwards, and capitalize on the big overs because I can score quickly. That was the best coaching I receive
Gambhir is currently appointed as the head coach of the Indian Men's cricket team. He joined the squad ahead for India's tour of Sri Lanka where the Men in Blue won the T20 series and Sri Lanka defeated India in ODIs.
