New Zealand's Tim Southee got in trouble for violating a rule during their T20 World Cup match against the West Indies. Specifically, he broke a level 1 offense of the ICC Code of Conduct for players.
Tim Southee penalised for breaching ICC's code of Conduct
This happened on Wednesday, June 12 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad. Southee was found guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which stands for “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”
Southee's outburst was his first offense in two years, but it still earned him a demerit point on his record. The whole thing happened after he got out in the 18th over. He got upset and broke a hand sanitizer dispenser on his way back to the locker room. Southee owned up to what he did and took the punishment without a fight. This means there won't be a formal hearing.
The umpires who saw the incident were Ahsan Raza, Alex Wharf, Richard Illingworth (third umpire), and Michael Gough (fourth umpire).
They decided to charge Southee with a Level 1 offense. Level 1 offenses typically get a warning (reprimand) at the least, but can also come with a fine (up to half of Southee's match fee) and one or two demerit points added to his record.
New Zealand out of T20 World Cup
The Black Caps' dream run in the T20 World Cup 2024 has come to a disappointing end. Their loss against the West Indies confirmed their elimination from the group stage. This means they won't be advancing to the Super 8 stage of the tournament. Their remaining matches against Papua New Guinea and Uganda will hold no bearing on their qualification, making them essentially inconsequential games.
This early exit follows a rough start for New Zealand. They were previously defeated by a dominant Afghan team by a massive margin of 84 runs. The Afghan bowlers, particularly Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan, put on a spectacular display, restricting the Kiwis to a paltry 75 runs. Farooqi's impressive bowling performance even earned him the Player of the Match award.
