On January 8, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced revised disciplinary actions for players Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Fazalhaq Farooqi, following their request to be released from central contracts. The ACB has decided to issue a "Final Warning" to the trio, accompanied by a "salary deduction." Additionally, they will retain their central contracts with the board.
The ACB has also agreed to issue "limited NOCs" (No Objection Certificates) for these players to participate in international T20 leagues, provided they commit to their national duties. This decision comes after Mujeeb Ur Rahman was previously withdrawn from the Melbourne Renegades squad in the Big Bash League (BBL) due to earlier sanctions by the ACB. Mujeeb had played six matches in the BBL's 13th season before the sanction came into effect on January 1.
The controversy began in December 2023 when Mujeeb, Fazalhaq, and Naveen-ul-Haq expressed their wish to be released from their central contracts. The ACB initially responded by delaying their 2024 annual contracts and withholding NOCs for playing in overseas leagues for two years.
Following an unconditional approach by the players towards the ACB, expressing their eagerness to represent Afghanistan again, the board conducted a thorough investigation. After reviewing the situation and considering the players’ importance to the national team, the board's committee presented its final recommendations.
"The modified recommendations state the following course of regulatory measures that are proportionate, effective & feasible and shall supersede the previous measures imposed on the players concerning the same issue," ACB said in a statement.
"Final Warning and Salary Deduction: Each player shall receive a final written warning and face a specific salary deduction from their monthly earnings and/or match fees.
"Limited NOCs: ACB will strictly consider the issuance of the NOCs to the respected players while prioritizing the national duty and ACB's interests.
"Central Contract: ACB may grant central contracts to these players while strictly monitoring their performance and discipline in events."
While Naveen and Fazalhaq were part of Afghanistan’s T20I series in the UAE, Mujeeb did not participate. The revised sanctions have also cleared uncertainties regarding the players' participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The players have been named in Afghanistan’s T20I squad for their upcoming series against India, which starts on January 11.
