Sri Lanka's head coach Sanath Jayasuriya shared a heartfelt tribute after the death of star all-rounder Dunith Wellalage's father Suranga Wellalage. Suranga, 54, passed away from a heart attack on Thursday night. The tragedy happened while Dunith was playing in Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup 2025 match against Afghanistan. Jayasuriya delivered the devastating news to the 22-year-old just after the team's six-wicket victory.
Sanath Jayasuriya steps in as father figure for Dunith Wellalage after tragic loss during Asia Cup
Following the news, Dunith immediately left for Sri Lanka on the first available flight. His participation in the rest of the Asia Cup is now in doubt, with Sri Lanka scheduled to play Bangladesh on Saturday in the Super Four stage, followed by matches against Pakistan and India. Hours after having to break the difficult news, Jayasuriya took to Facebook to share a message of support and remembrance for the family.
"Dunith, your father was a cricketer himself, and he can be truly proud of the son he raised. His values, his love for the game, and his spirit live on through you. I know how strong you are, and I have no doubt that you will continue to make him proud by winning many games for Sri Lanka," Jayasuriya wrote.
Jayasuriya has offered his support to young all-rounder Wellalage following the passing of his father. Jayasuriya has promised to serve as a father figure for Dunith during this difficult time. This personal and heartfelt gesture adds to the emotional tributes that have poured in for the Wellalage family.
"At this difficult moment, please remember that you are not alone. I will be there for you like a father — guiding you, standing with you, and supporting you every step of the way. The entire team, the nation, and everyone who loves this sport are by your side."
Wellalage delivered a strong performance in what was his fifth T20I match against Afghanistan. He secured the crucial wicket of opener Ibrahim Zadran and gave his all to the game, contributing to Sri Lanka's six-wicket victory, which was spearheaded by an unbeaten 74 from Kusal Mendis. Unbeknownst to him, this was all happening while a personal tragedy awaited him off the field.
Following the news of his father’s passing, condolences have poured in from the cricketing world. Among those to express their grief on social media were former Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga and Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has not yet named a replacement, leaving the option open for Wellalage to rejoin the squad if he feels ready to do so later in the tournament.
