In a worrisome development for Team India and its fans, vice-captain Shubman Gill has reportedly sustained a hand injury just before the high-stakes Asia Cup 2025 match against Pakistan. The highly anticipated clash between the arch-rivals is scheduled for Sunday, September 14, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

According to a Times of India report, Gill suffered the injury during a practice session which raises questions about his availability for the crucial encounter.

Reports indicate that Shubman Gill was in visible discomfort after being struck on the hand during a practice session. The team physio immediately came to his aid, and Gill was seen walking off the field. He later sat on an icebox, holding his injured hand. Following the incident, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir had a lengthy conversation with Gill. His opening partner, Abhishek Sharma, also offered support by helping him open a water bottle while the physio continued to monitor his condition. Despite the initial scare, Gill was back in the nets a few minutes later, ready to resume his practice.
In the event that Shubman Gill is unable to play against Pakistan, Sanju Samson is expected to open the batting. Samson is India’s primary wicketkeeper-batter in T20Is and showed his capability last year by scoring three centuries as an opener in the format. He was part of the playing XI against the UAE but did not get to bat in the 58-run chase.
Despite being India's highest wicket-taker in T20Is with 99 dismissals in 63 matches, star pacer Arshdeep Singh was left out of the team against the UAE. In his absence, Shivam Dube bowled two overs, taking 3 wickets for only four runs, while Kuldeep Yadav claimed 4 wickets for seven runs in 2.1 overs. Given these impressive performances, it is likely that the Indian team management will stick with the same playing XI for the upcoming match against Pakistan.
