Cricket enthusiasts and experts alike were taken aback by the BCCI's decision to exclude Yuzvendra Chahal from India's Asia Cup squad, scheduled to kick-off from August 30. Among the notable voices that echoed surprise was former South African skipper, AB De Villiers. His stance on the issue was firmly rooted in the belief that Chahal, with his recent form, deserved a spot on the team.

The team announcement for the Asia Cup 2023 came to light on August 21, 2023, with Rohit Sharma leading as captain and Hardik Pandya taking up the vice-captain mantle. The cricketing community took particular note of the missing name of Yuzvendra Chahal amidst a roster of prominent players.

Elucidating on the rationale behind Chahal's omission, Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, pinpointed the overall team balance and the desired combination as pivotal factors. An underlying trend became apparent when the selection board inclined towards Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, sidelining Chahal. Axar Patel's batting prowess was highlighted as a significant determinant in this context.

Captain Rohit Sharma provided further clarity on this contentious decision. Emphasising the team's strategy, he remarked that accommodating Chahal would entail sidelining a seamer, an approach the team wasn't willing to adopt. However, in an assuring tone, Sharma hinted at potential avenues to reintegrate Chahal into the squad, asserting that the spinner's future in the team wasn't sealed.

In the face of this setback, Chahal showcased resilience, posting a suggestive tweet, which many interpreted as a reflection of his optimistic outlook towards a prospective comeback.

Taking to his YouTube channel and, AB De Villiers, a stalwart of the cricketing arena, candidly addressed the issue. Advocating for the inclusion of the skillful leg-spinner, de Villiers opined, "Chahal has been dropped, selectors making their intentions clear who they will be picking. It's a bit of a disappointing drop for me, Yuzi is always very handy and it's great to have the leg-spinning option in your team. We know how skilful he is."
