Among the notable voices that echoed surprise was former South African skipper, AB De Villiers. His stance on the issue was firmly rooted in the belief that Chahal, with his recent form, deserved a spot on the team.
The team announcement for the Asia Cup 2023 came to light on August 21, 2023, with Rohit Sharma leading as captain and Hardik Pandya taking up the vice-captain mantle. The cricketing community took particular note of the missing name of Yuzvendra Chahal amidst a roster of prominent players.
Elucidating on the rationale behind Chahal's omission, Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, pinpointed the overall team balance and the desired combination as pivotal factors. An underlying trend became apparent when the selection board inclined towards Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, sidelining Chahal. Advocating for the inclusion of the skillful leg-spinner, de Villiers opined, "Chahal has been dropped, selectors making their intentions clear who they will be picking. It's a bit of a disappointing drop for me, Yuzi is always very handy and it's great to have the leg-spinning option in your team. We know how skilful he is."
