Sri Lanka's cricket captain, Dasun Shanaka, exudes confidence as his team gears up to face India in the much-anticipated Asia Cup Final 2023. Scheduled to be played at the iconic R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on 17 September, this marks Sri Lanka's consecutive appearance in the Asia Cup final. Fans vividly recall how the Sri Lankan side, against all expectations, clinched the trophy in the 2022 edition held in UAE, albeit in a distinct game format.
During a pre-match press conference, Shanaka emphasized that the team's selection would be influenced by the pitch conditions presented on the final day. He highlighted the strategic importance of claiming early wickets to secure a win against the formidable Indian side. Reflecting on their Asia Cup journey, the captain mentioned that the team seems to be hitting its stride at the opportune moment. He also conveyed his optimism about the younger players, expecting them to exhibit aggressive gameplay against the opponents.
"Of course we are ready," a confident Shanaka said ahead of the final n a pre-match press conference.
"Totally depends on the pitch. The pitches have been playing a big part in the tournament, so we have picked up sides accordingly. Bowling against India, we need to take more wickets upfront, and that will open up the game for us," Shanaka said.
India, despite being strong contenders, will be entering the final with a recent Super 4 loss to Bangladesh, potentially making them hungry for a redeeming victory. On the other hand, Sri Lanka rides high on momentum. They recently clinched a nail-biting victory against Pakistan in a rain-affected match, decided on the last ball.
"We are peaking at the right time. The boys want to deliver for the country. We have been the underdogs and everybody wants us to perform in the big tournaments. The young boys are trying to prove themselves," Shanaka said about his team.
"Playing 2 finals in 2 years is special. I get messages from fans that 'why are you giving us a heart-attack'," Shanaka said ahead of the final match against India.
With the Asia Cup Final 2023 around the corner, cricket enthusiasts worldwide are set for a thrilling contest between two of the subcontinent's cricketing giants.
