The frustration and waiting game continued on the reserve day (September 11, Monday) as the India vs Pakistan contest headed for a delayed start with the rain once again arriving in Colombo as an unwanted guest. The match which was scheduled to resume at 3 PM IST, didn't commence at the slated time as players from both teams stood on the balconies of their respective dressing rooms and stared at the sky.
What is the cut-off time on reserve day?
Now, the most important thing to know about reserve day is when can the match start at the latest. As per the rules, both teams are required to play 20 overs each in order for a result in an ODI game. India have already batted for 24.1 overs and in case, the weather continues to play hide and seek in Colombo, the match has to resume latest by 10:36 PM IST.
In that scenario, Pakistan will begin their run chase directly and India won't bat in the game anymore. Babar Azam's men will have a target of 181 runs to chase in 20 overs.
Covers removed
As of 3:50 PM IST, the ground staff at the R Premadasa Stadium began to remove the covers as the rain subsided. The two on-field umpires made their way to the ground for a general inspection. One would hope that the rain stays away and the fans get to witness the full contest between the two arch-rivals. But as we have seen in the last 24 hours, the weather has been extremely fickle and it has started to pour at any given time.
What happened on Sunday?
At the time when rain intervened, India's score was 147/2 after 24.1 overs with Virat Kohli batting on eight runs off 16 balls and KL Rahul partnering his former skipper at 17 not out off 28 balls.
The start of the game was all about Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who batted exceptionally against the quality pace attack of Pakistan. The Indian captain scored his 50th half-century in ODIs after Shubman brought up his fifty. The duo registered a 121-run stand in 100 balls before Shadab Khan dismissed the Indian skipper. Rohit departed after scoring 56 runs off 49 balls with the help of six fours and four sixes.
Shaheen Afridi dismissed Shubman in the very next over as he outfoxed the Indian batter with a slower delivery. The right-handed batter departed after scoring 58 runs off 52 balls with the help of 10 fours.
