Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer expressed his desire to bowl for the national team but cited his recent back surgery and injury history as reasons for not being allowed to do so by the strength and conditioning coaches. The 28-year-old, who underwent back surgery, has faced a considerable amount of time away from international cricket due to his recovery.
Despite his wish to contribute to the ball, the coaching staff has advised against it to ensure his complete rehabilitation. Shreyas has only bowled 7.3 overs in international cricket, conceding 43 runs without claiming a wicket. His limited bowling record is attributed to concerns about his physical condition.
"I have been longing to bowl, but the strength and conditioning coaches, they are right 'now you are not going to bowl for some time'. That's the sad part of it," Shreyas was quoted as saying on Jio Cinemas after the match.
In first-class, List A and T20 cricket, Shreyas has picked up 10 wickets.
In the recent fifth T20I match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, Shreyas showcased his prowess with the bat. Batting at No.3, he scored an impressive 53 runs off 37 balls, including five fours and two sixes. This noteworthy performance helped India post a total of 160 for eight wickets. Throughout the three-game series, Shreyas accumulated a total of 65 runs at an average of 21.67.
Besides his batting skills, Shreyas also made valuable contributions in the field by taking two catches to dismiss Aaron Hardie and Matthew Wade. Despite the success in the T20I series, Shreyas is set to face a new challenge as he prepares to join the Indian team for their upcoming tour to South Africa. The tour will involve T20Is, Tests, and ODIs, providing Shreyas with an opportunity to further showcase his skills in different formats of the game.
