In what comes as another setback for struggling Australia, captain Pat Cummins has been ruled out from the 3rd Test of the Border-Gavaskar series. Cummins, who had flown back to Australia after the completion of the 2nd Test match in Delhi due to his mother being “ill and in palliative care”, will not return to India for Indore Test.

"I have decided against returning to India at this time," said Cummins.

"I feel I am best being here with my family.
“I appreciate the overwhelming support I have received from Cricket Australia and my teammates. Thanks for your understanding,” he added.

The Aussie captain is not ruled out from the fourth Test but is likely to remain in Australia for an elongated period of time.

In the first two matches, Cummins could hardly make an impact for Australia, who have lost both games and trail 0-2 in the four-match series. The right-arm pacer bagged just three wickets in four outings.

Meanwhile, Smith will lead Australia for the third time after being reinstated in the leadership role. The stylish batter has a wealth of experience when it comes to leadership. Smith led the Baggy Greens in 34 matches between 2014 and 2018. He was the captain when Australia last toured India in 2017.

The third Test is scheduled to start on March 01 in Indore.
