Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, India vs Australia century records: Most century, highest scores

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is back, once again with four Tests as the first match of the mega event kicks off in Nagpur on Thursday, February 9. The visitors Australia will be looking for their first victory against India away from home since 2004, and the onus will be on the Indian batters to tackle the threat that their spinners carry.

This series is also important in terms of the World Test Championship as the final might be played between these two teams. In other words, the team that does well will go ahead. Australia have a foot in the final, while India need to win a minimum of three matches to directly qualify.

With the exciting bilateral competition knocking on our doors, we take a look at the players with the most centuries in this competition.

Sachin Tendulkar
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy used to be a happy hunting ground for the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The 'Master Blaster' is at the top of the list of batters with the most centuries in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with nine 100+ scored and a single double century to his name.

His highest score against Australia is 241, which came at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2004. In total, Sachin has played 65 innings and scored 3262 runs with an average of 56.24. These also include 16 half-centuries.
Steve Smith
Australia's Steve Smith is second on this list. The Test skipper of Australia has scored eight centuries for his team in this competition, with his highest score of 192 runs coming in 2014. In total, Smith has scored 1742 runs in 28 innings at an average of 72.58. He has five half-centuries to his name as well.

Ricky Ponting
Another former Australia captain on this list is Ricky Ponting. He has smashed eight centuries in 36 innings, and his total runs in this competition are 2555 runs, averaging 54.26. He has also scored 12 half-centuries.

Virat Kohli
From former Australian skippers to a former Indian one. With seven tons, Virat Kohli is fourth on this list, just behind Ponting and Smith on centuries. One century for Virat and he will equal their number of centuries. He needs to score two centuries in this series to equal Sachin's record, and three to go past the Master Blaster for the most centuries in this competition!

But if he scores two centuries, he will equal Sachin here. And with three centuries, he will leave behind even Sachin. Talking about Virat Kohli's performance in the Border Gavaskar series, he has scored 1682 runs in 36 innings at an average of 48.05. With 5 half-centuries to his name, Virat's highest score is 169.
