In the second One-Day International (ODI) match at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, off-spinner Deepti Sharma set a new record by becoming the first Indian to take five wickets in a match against Australia. The 26-year-old surpassed the previous best of 4/41, set by Nooshin Al Khadeer in Chennai in 2004. This achievement marked Deepti's second five-wicket haul in ODIs.
Additionally, Deepti is the third spinner to achieve a five-wicket feat against Australia in ODIs.
Deepti joined the ranks of Murali Kartik, Ajit Agarkar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Shastri, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, and Mohammed Shami, becoming the eighth Indian to take a five-wicket haul in ODIs against Australia, encompassing both men's and women's cricket.
Deepti began her wicket-taking spree by claiming the crucial wicket of Ellyse Perry, who was dismissed on 50 after playing a misguided shot. Subsequently, she successfully trapped Beth Mooney LBW, with Mooney's DRS appeal proving unsuccessful.
Deepti continued her momentum by taking the wicket of Georgia Wareham in the first ball of an over, with Wareham caught by Smriti Mandhana at deep mid-wicket. The very next delivery saw a potential wicket of Alana King overturned through a successful DRS review.
Nevertheless, Deepti achieved her five-wicket haul by dismissing Annabel Sutherland with a well-tossed delivery that Sutherland hit straight back to her.
Deepti is now just one wicket away from joining the elite club of Indian women cricketers, including Jhulan Goswami, Neetu David, and Nooshin Al Khadeer, in reaching the milestone of 100 wickets in ODIs.
