BCCI announces India squad for first Test against Bangladesh with three big surprises

Akash Deep added to India squad after 9 wickets haul in Duleep Trophy 2024.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the upcoming first Test match against Bangladesh which will start from September 19 to 23 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. India star speedster Jasprit Bumrah has been added to the squad. This will be the first outing for Bumrah after the T20 World Cup 2024 final where India defeated South Africa to clinch the title. India star batter Virat Kohli is also making his comeback in the squad. Kohli last played a Test match in January earlier this year. 

 

India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer missed the spot in the 16-member squad for the first Test match against Bangladesh. India are going three wicketkeeper batters including KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel and Rishabh Pant. India speedster Akash Deep has also been retained in the squad after his impressive performance in the first round of the Duleep Trophy 2024. Akash Deep picked up nine wickets for picked up 4 for 60 and 5 for 56 for India A against India B in the opener clash in Duleep Trophy 2024 opener clash.

However, Mohammed Shami failed to make it to the Test side even though chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had earlier expressed that the right-arm seamer was targeting a return in the first Test against Bangladesh. Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal gets maiden India call-up for Bangladesh Test series.

 

The second Test of the series is scheduled to be held at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur from September 27 to October 1.

 

India and Bangladesh have contested 13 Tests to date, with India securing 11 victories and two matches ending in draws.

 

Bangladesh are coming into this series registering their historic 2-0 Test series win against Pakistan on their home soil.  In contrast, this will be India's first Test since their 4-1 series victory over England at home earlier this year, from January to March.
