Bangladesh needs 515 runs to win the 1st Test against India.

After Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja's heroics in the 1st innings, the Indian young duo of Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant's centuries helped India to take the lead of 514 runs before Rohit Sharma declared the inning for India in the 1st Test match against Bangladesh at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After Virat Kohli's controversial dismissal on Day 2, Pant joined Gill and both batters managed 167 runs stand for the next wicket.

Making a remarkable return to Test cricket after 634 days due to a serious car crash in December 2022, Pant displayed his signature strokeplay, scoring his sixth Test century off just 124 balls. With this achievement, he equalled the legendary former captain MS Dhoni for the most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper.

After Pant's dismissal for a well-crafted 109 (128 balls; 13 fours, 4 sixes), Gill reached his fifth Test century, taking 161 balls to achieve the milestone. He faced a total of 176 balls in his innings, hitting 10 boundaries and clearing the ropes four times.

The third day of the first Test started with the host India being at 81/3, with Gill (33*) and Pant (12*) unbeaten on the crease. The Rohit Sharma-led side crossed the 100-run mark in the 29th over of their third innings. Both Gill and Pant reached their 50-run partnership in the 38th over, with Pant striking a boundary off right-arm off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Gill then brought up his half-century in just 79 balls, hitting a six off the last delivery of the 30th over.

India surpassed 150 runs in the 44th over, with Pant also notching his half-century in the same over by taking a single off Mehidy, reaching the milestone in 88 balls. The duo completed their 100-run partnership in the 48th over. By the end of the first session, Gill and Pant had established an unbeaten partnership of 138 runs off 190 balls.
