Following his failure on the opening day of the Chennai Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, on September 19, star Indian batter Shubman Gill became the latest addition to the unwanted ducks list of Indian batters which also consists of legendary player Virat Kohli. Gill did not appear to be in great touch during the knock and was removed for an eight-ball duck at the Chepauk. Bangladesh bowlers were consistent in their attempt to force Gill to play on the leg side and their efforts worked when the batter knicked off a delivery from Hasan Mahmud and lost his wicket.
Hasan Mahmud would again place the ball on Gill's leg side on the third delivery of the eighth over. It forced him to try a flick, and as a result, the ball found the edge and went to Litton Das. Gill joined an undesirable list alongside Kohli with this, his third duck at home this year. With three or more ducks in a calendar year, Gill became the sixth Indian batter to do so. In 1983, Mohinder Amarnath tops the undesirable list with five ducks. The list also consists of legendary names like Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (1969), Dilip Vengsarkar (1979) and Vinod Kambli (1994). Virat Kohli joined the list after he got 3 ducks at home during 2021.
Gill was out twice for ducks in this year's home Test series against England. In the Hyderabad Test, it happened in the second innings, while in the Rajkot Test, it happened in the first. Despite the losses, Gill would have a wonderful series against England, scoring two hundreds and two fifties.
