Star Pakistan batter Babar Azam got out on a duck on Day 1 of the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh which is being played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, on August 21 (Wednesday). This was the 8th occasion that Babar had to return to the dugout without scoring a single run in Test cricket. The game on Day 1 started with a big delay due to rain and wet outfield and later it was reduced to 48 overs on the first Day. Pakistan lost their first three wickets inside 10 overs itself, but it was the dismissal of Babar that confirmed that visitors had managed to push Shan Masood's side on the back foot early on.

Babar's underwhelming performance in Tests

Babar Azam is not in his best touch, he has not breached the 50-run mark in his last 13 Test innings. His last 50-plus score in International red-ball cricket came back in December of 2022 against New Zealand in Karachi. He was expected to play a key role in this Test series against Bangladesh as it is crucial for their campaign in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bowl first their decision turned out really fine as they reduced Pakistan to 16/3 by the 9th over.

Shoriful Islam got two wickets and Hasan Mahmud got one. Babar along with Abdullah Shafique and captain Shan Masood is back in the pavilion. The hosts need a good partnership here to get out of this early slump but a couple more wickets might just take them out of the contest in the first innings.
