Andre Russell made his debut for Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Melbourne Stars on Friday (December 10). In a nail-biting encounter Russell played against his old franchise Sydney Thunders. Considered as one of the best all-rounders in T20 cricket, the Caribbean had to follow heavy restrictions due to Covid-19 quarantine rules in Victoria and New South Wales (NSW).
The 33-year-old arrived in Australia a week earlier and was obliged for seven days quarantine. After initially spending a few days in Sydney, the Caribbean in Melbourne on Thursday and is yet to complete his mandatory quarantine. However, the player was given green light to compete in the match against Sydney Thunders on certain restrictions.
Bizarre on-field restrictions
The right-arm bowler was not allowed to high-five any player, needed to arrive separately and was also needed to sit two metres away from the rest of the squad. Even in case of a post-match interview, different microphones were provided to avoid contact with the player who was recently helped Deccan Gladiators win T10 League 2021. There were strict orders from Cricket Australia (CA) to franchises regarding the Covid-19 guidelines.
Russell will be a big asset for Stars as they seek their first title in BBL. The player was most recently retained by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and has served as a loyal customer to the Shahrukh Khan-owned franchise.
Russell's performance
The 33-year-old ended up having a mix day as he scored 17 runs with bat, but was expensive with the ball as he conceded 40 runs in his four overs and remained wicketless. Melbourne Stars will next be in action on Sunday (December 12) against the same opponent in the return leg where Russell could take the field without quarantine restrictions imposed on him.
