After a 23-year-long illustrious career, Australia's star batter Shaun Marsh announced his retirement following Melbourne Renegades failed to advance to the playoffs in the 2023-24 Big Bash League (BBL). Marsh's final appearance was on January 13, where he produced a stunning performance, scoring a decisive 64 runs that led the Renegades to victory over the Stars in the Melbourne derby at the Docklands Stadium. This match also marked Aaron Finch's final T20 game, following his retirement announcement earlier in the year.
“I have loved playing for the Renegades, I've met some great people over the last five years and the friendships I've made will last a lifetime,” Marsh said following his retirement.
“This playing group is special. They've been amazing to me, amazing teammates and even better friends. Our members and fans are some of the most passionate out there, and I'm so thankful for their support over the journey. Stick with us, there's a huge amount of talent in this group and I have no doubt they'll lead this group back to the top,” he added.
During the current BBL season, Marsh amassed 181 runs in a total of five matches at an impressive average of 45.25, including three half-centuries.
Marsh had earlier retired from First-Class cricket, with his last Test match appearance dating back to January 2019 against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Marsh rose to fame after being the top run-scorer in the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL). Following this, he made his ODI and T20I debuts on a tour to the West Indies later the same year. Across his international career, Marsh played 38 Tests, 73 ODIs, and 15 T20Is for Australia, scoring 2265, 2773, and 255 runs respectively. He achieved 13 centuries and 25 half-centuries. Starting his career at the young age of 17, he continued playing until he was 40.
