In a moment of pride for the country, India have been guaranteed a medal in Lawn Bowls for the very first time ever in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 in Birmingham on Monday, August 1.
The quadruple of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikai and Rupa Rani Tirkey were the four women who have written their names in history books after beating New Zealand 16-13 in the semifinals.
They will now face South Africa in the final after the Proteas beat Fiji 14-16 in their semifinal event.
India were put on the backfoot at the very beginning of the match, with the Kiwis taking a 5-1 lead heading into the fourth round of the event. But the side did extremely well to bounce back from their initial disappointments to hold the New Zealanders to 6 points for five consecutive rounds, before entering the 10th round with a brilliant scoreline reading 10-7.
The women were the team to beat in the final five rounds of the competition, with New Zealand playing catch up for most of the remainder of the match. Eventually, they were unable to match their Indian counterparts from creating their own piece of history as the Indian women enter the final as underdogs.
