CWG 2022: India's medal rush continues as Lovepreet Singh bags ninth medal in weightlifting

Lovepreet Singh hogged the limelight on Day 6 as he bagged a bronze medal in the men's weightlifting final in the 109 Category on Wednesday.

With this India's weightlifting medal tally reached nine and overall 14. 

Lovepreet hails from Punjab and has won a silver medal in the same category at Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships at Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2021.

The 24-year-old began with a massive 157kg in the first snatch. But his third lift of 163kg ensured that Lovepreet finished at the 2nd spot at the snatch event.

In the first clean and jerk, he successfully lifted 185kg, following it up with a 189kg lift. Lovepreet finished the event with a lift of 192kg. Unlike many of the other weightlifters, Lovepreet completed all his lifts successfully without a disqualification. 

 

Success for weightlifting in CWG 2022

Earlier in the competition, Sanket Sargar kicked off India's medal tally with a silver medal on the 2nd day of the Games, missing out on an elusive gold by just 1kg. Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Anchita Sheuli, have all won golds for India, while Bindyarani Devi and Sanket have secured silvers. 

Lovepreet joins Gururaja Poojary, Harjinder Kaur and Vikas Thakur among the weightlifters with a bronze medal in the event so far.
