Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia, and Rupa Rani Tirkey scripted their own piece of history in the Women's Fours event of Lawn Bowls at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 in Birmingham on Tuesday, August 2. The side beat South Africa 17-10 in the 15-round event as they secure the first ever medal — a gold — in the sport usually dominated by Australia, England, and New Zealand.
The side first joined the books of history in the semifinals when they beat New Zealand 16-13 after a slow start. They entered the competition as underdogs but such an achievement is a major plus for sports in India.
The Indian women were on the front foot from the very beginning, although the South Africans were always in contention for a medal in the sport. Taking an 8-2 lead in the seventh round of the ultimate match, the side did extremely well to take a 10-8 lead in the final.
But the Indian women did extremely well to get over the blip and snatch the lead back from their opponents. It was completely smooth sailing from then on, with the Indian women winning the final five rounds to take their total tally of 17 and bagging a historic gold in the event.
This is the fourth gold for India at the ongoing international multinational event, taking India's total medals tally to 10.
