Sussex captain Cheteshwar Pujara has faced a one-match suspension after the County Cricket Club received an automatic 12-point deduction for passing the threshold of receiving four fixed penalties in the ongoing County Championship season.

As per the England Cricket Board's (ECB) Professional Conduction Regulation 4.27, "during any season Registered Cricketers registered with or on loan to the same First-Class County whilst playing for that Team in the County Championship, receive 4 or more fixed penalties”.

“Regulation 4.29 states that the automatic penalty for such an offence shall be a deduction of 12 points,” ECB’s media release further stated.

Sussex faced two fixed penalties in their clash against Leicestershire where Jaydev Unadkat's six-fer in the last innings led them to a narrow win by 15 runs. Earlier in the season, Sussex had received two fixed penalties as well. As a result, the club faced a 12-point deduction.

Pujara has been suspended for one match as Regulation 4.30 suggests that it will be considered a separate offense for the captain who led the side in all the matches.

Sussex confirmed that the 35-year-old batter has decided not to appeal any of the decisions and will not feature in their next game against Derbyshire starting September 19.

As a result, Sussex are placed fifth on the points table with just two wins from 12 games. Sussex's nine games have ended in a draw whereas they suffered defeat in one.
