Tamim Iqbal-led Bangladesh created history at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram on March 6. The hosts humbled reigning ODI World Cup champions in the dead rubber as they beat the visitors by 50 runs.
The 50-run victory is Bangladesh’s biggest win by runs against England in ODI cricket. This is also their fifth ODI victory over England. The last ODI win against England for Bangladesh came in October 2016. Mashrafe Mortaza-led Bangladesh beat England by 34 runs in Mirpur.
Veteran all-rounder turned out to be the destruction-in-chief. After scoring a 71-ball 75 to help Bangladesh post a fighting total of 246 on the board, he picked up four wickets for 35 runs to derail England's run chase. The southpaw won the ‘Player of the match’ for his all-round performance.
Chasing 247, England started off well with Philip Salt making use of fielding restrictions. Shakib got Salt's wicket off a nothing delivery. The opener scored 35 runs off just 25 deliveries including seven fours. In the next over, Ebadaot Hossain got the big wicket of centurion of first match, Dawid Malan. Shakib struck again with the wicket of Jason Roy. The opener was beaten by the arm ball from Shakib around the stumps.
From 55/3 in 11th over, England needed a partnership. James Vince and Sam Curran did some damage control. Curran was struggling to rotate the strike. The miscued shot off short delivery landed in Litton Das' hands. Mehidy Hasan Miraz got the breakthrough. The all-rounder scored 23 runs from 39 deliveries. Vince did not stay long at the crease after that. He edged one to wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim off Shakib's bowling. He scored 38 runs from 44 deliveries including three fours and one six. Moeen Ali failed to make an impact as well and got bowled by Hossain. England found themselves struggling at 130/6 in the 28th over.
Buttler was not getting boundaries but he was still scoring more than run-a-ball. He became Taijul Islam's first victim of the day. He went for the reverse sweep but missed the ball and got out lbw for a 24-ball 26. Islam struck again as he knocked over Adil Rashid's (8) off-stump. Debutant Rehan Ahmed got out to Shakib and became his fourth victim. Shakib also became the first Bangladesh bowler to take 300 ODI wickets. Mustafizur Rahman ended Chris Woakes' fightback as he caught him off his own bowling. Woakes scored 34 runs from 46 deliveries. England got all out for 196 with 41 deliveries left in the innings to lose the dead rubber.
Earlier, Iqbal won the toss and opted to bat first. Curran struck early and got Das for a three-ball duck. Curran then got rid of skipper Iqbal in his second over. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Rahim shared a 98-run partnership for the third wicket. Shanto got run out after scoring half-century. He scored 53 off 71 deliveries. Rahim scored his half-century as well but missed out on a chance to get to his century. Rahim got bowled by Rashid. He scored 70 runs from 93 deliveries including six fours.
Rashid got another wicket in the form of Mahmudullah (8). Afif Hossain could not make an impact as well and got out to Woakes in the 44th over. Shakib did the bulk of scoring with wickets falling at the other end. Miraz, Islam registered single-digit scores whereas Shakib scored 71-ball 75 including seven fours. Archer bowled well in slog overs and ended Bangladesh's innings in the penultimate over with the wickets of Shakib and Mustafiqur off consecutive deliveries. Bangladesh managed to post 246 from 48.5 overs.
